The media and immigration, a challenge or an opportunity for young people?

Young people who want to leave the country, skilled people looking for work abroad, elders who remain lonely. Immigration is hitting Albania hard. The expression “a heavy stone weighs in its place” does not seem to apply to Albanians anymore. Looking beyond the border, Albanian citizens want to settle somewhere far away from their home country.

Why do Albanians leave?

According to some experts, but also from the Albanian youth point of view of the low standards of living in Albania, the high level of unemployment, as well as the low level of wages, among the lowest in the region are among the factors that push young people towards immigration. Also, career and educational goals play a key role in leaving Albania. Therefore, a life away from Albania seems to be the dream of many young Albanians as a result of poor quality education or unemployment and many other factors.

To demotivate the departure of young people it is advisable to adjust the alignment of university curricula and diplomas with the labour market. Above all, the system of values and merit must be regulated, nepotism and preferential treatments based on political affiliations must be addressed.

Although the departure of young people is not only an Albanian phenomenon, there is a big difference with foreign young people who are willing to return to their countries to bring a new experience, while a small part of the young immigrants from Albania would consider coming back.

The increase in the number of citizens at retirement age and the departure of the labour force worsens the social and economic status of the country. Especially the departure of skilled workers who are also significant contributors to the social security scheme due to their higher salaries. With the departure of young people abroad, there is an increase of older people living alone and are in need of emotional and financial support.

Albanian youth studying abroad do not want to return

According to a study, Albanian students studying abroad do not wish to return to Albania. From a study conducted with participants aged between 18 to 40 years old, they expressed the desire to leave Albania. The question that arises is why exactly this age group? Young people from Albania who want to work and study abroad usually tend to not come back to Albania, only a small percentage of them would consider returning to Albania.

The massive immigration is related to the perception that young people have of economic and social conditions. Our policies should stimulate production, job creation, and economic growth, to translate into increased welfare of citizens, but we also need better services by strengthening the education system, the health system, and citizen’s safety. However, the Albanian authorities do not seem worried regarding the immigration concern.

Additionally, media plays a huge role in the choices of young people, media in Albania has a tendency to promote the concept of immigration as something common and not worrying. Therefore, media should be aware that their statements can influence the choices of young people. Because of the media’s influence, young people are able to perceive what is acceptable and what is not.

The legal and policy framework related to immigration needs to be improved in several areas at the national level:

  • Improve infrastructure and immigration management.
  • Analyse the implementation of the law, the legal framework of immigration because there are gaps in bylaws and other specific acts.
  • Provide employment and self-employment assistance.
  • Disseminate as much information as possible about vocational training programs, etc.

The goal is for immigrants to understand and value themselves more as they become acquainted with new cultures, traditions, and new people. As well as to get acquainted with the devastating consequences that immigration brings to their family, children, and the younger generation. Albania needs the spirit of youth and only youth can drive change, therefore, invest in your home country because immigration can be both beneficial and harmful
